When Renana and I were brainstorming ideas for this blog we talked alot about the resources that we used and the ones that we wished existed. As an educator, I am always scrambling to find the perfect book to accompany a cooking or gardening lesson.
For example, if I was teaching a lesson about carrots for four-year olds – I just wanted a list of every picture book out there about carrots with a description, review, and suggestions for recipes. Was that too much to ask for??? I know – the answer is The Carrot Seed and carrot pancakes – but you get what I’m saying.
In the past several months of putting our list together and developing the resources we wanted - it’s been so fun to return to favorite standbys and discover new gems. I loved re-reading Higglety, Pigglety Pop! and searching the library to find the perfect book to accompany the recipe for Maple Cinnamon Coconut Chips. And just the other day, I stumbled upon How to Cook the Perfect Day by Nikki McClure and it inspired a new family dinner game (coming soon). You guys, I can’t wait to share more of the book's beautiful images and lesson ideas soon. If you are already a fan of Nikki McClure, you all know how amazing her books are.
There are many more books we are vetting for the list and have ideas about how it can be more helpful, like including specifics about the age level, linking to lesson plans, making the list searchable by season, age and topic. But, we want to hear from you also – How do you find great books about food or gardening for your kids or students? What are your favorites? What topics are you looking for?
This has quickly and surprisingly been my favorite part of Two Moms’ Kitchen and I can’t wait to create the resource we have always been looking for and one that I hope is useful for all of the parents and teachers out there looking for the perfect book.
